Manufacturer battery estimates use different volume, sound and lighting settings, so the hour figures are not a head-to-head runtime test. Water ratings apply under specified conditions; follow the manual, close port covers and dry the charging port before charging. Two speakers do not automatically pair just because both use Bluetooth. Check exact-generation compatibility before buying a second unit.

Before you choose

Answers to the practical questions behind this shortlist.

Can two speakers from the same brand always play together?

Do not assume so. Check the exact models and supported linking system. JBL describes Charge 6 stereo pairing with another Charge 6 and multi-speaker linking with compatible Auracast-enabled JBL speakers. That does not establish compatibility with every older JBL speaker.

JBL: Charge 6 pairing modes
Is the biggest battery-life number the normal listening time?

Check the mode behind the claim. JBL lists up to 24 hours for Charge 6, with an extra four hours using Playtime Boost. Those are manufacturer estimates, not our measurements or a guarantee at your listening volume.

JBL: Charge 6 playtime conditions
Should I replace my current speaker or add another?

Start with the problem you need to solve: easier carrying, longer listening or shared playback. If your current speaker already fits, keeping it may be the better choice. If adding a second unit, verify the exact pair and whether you want stereo or a larger group before buying.

The Charge 6 combines a removable strap, phone-charging output and Auracast speaker linking. Its mix of portability, protection and connection options makes it a useful first comparison for taking music between home and outdoors.

  • IP68 water and dust rating
  • Up to 24 hours; 28 with Playtime Boost
  • Phone power bank; Auracast linking
The tradeoff

It is larger than a pocket speaker. Battery life depends on volume and mode; Playtime Boost is a separate setting. Auracast does not make older JBL pairing systems compatible.

PositionIQ adjusts playback for the speaker’s orientation, while the Bose app provides EQ controls. Its small, flat shape and utility loop suit a bag or shelf when a larger handled speaker would be awkward.

  • IP67 protection and a floating design
  • Up to 12 hours at moderate volume
  • App EQ; compatible speaker pairing
The tradeoff

A single Flex plays mono, and it cannot charge your phone. Stereo pairing requires another compatible model; check second-generation compatibility before adding to an older Bose setup.

A compact, floating speaker with Outdoor Boost and a dedicated podcast mode. It is the straightforward choice here for someone who prefers physical controls and a small footprint to a larger speaker with a light show.

  • IP67 water and dust rating
  • Up to 14 hours of playback
  • Outdoor Boost and podcast mode
The tradeoff

Speaker grouping is restricted: it does not connect with BOOM, MEGABOOM or HYPERBOOM. Its small enclosure is a portability choice, not a promise of large-party bass or volume.

Sony pairs a multi-way strap with an ULT button that changes the bass presentation. It is worth comparing if you want a portable speaker that can hang or stand in different orientations without moving to a large boombox.

  • IP67 protection with rear cap secured
  • Up to 12 hours; conditions apply
  • Multi-way strap and ULT bass mode
The tradeoff

Sony’s battery estimate uses specific volume and sound settings. The bass button is a tonal preference, not evidence of better fidelity. This is FIELD 1, not the larger FIELD 3 or FIELD 5.

The Boom 2 is the carry-handle alternative for a picnic table or garage. Its woofer, two tweeters and switchable lighting suit shoppers who can accommodate more bulk than the smaller picks.

  • IPX7 water rating; floatable
  • Up to 24 hours with lights and BassUp off
  • 60 W standard; up to 80 W BassUp
The tradeoff

IPX7 does not state a dust rating. There is no AUX input and the wall charger is separate. Battery figures are manufacturer estimates; watts do not establish louder or better sound across brands.
