Before you choose

Answers to the practical questions behind this shortlist.

Should I choose a snow shovel or a snow pusher?

Start with where the snow needs to go. A pusher moves it along the ground when there is room at the edge; a shovel or combination tool is more useful when some snow must be lifted. THE SNOWPLOW 50524 is a dedicated pusher. Keep a lifting tool for banks and tight spots rather than expecting one blade to do every job.

THE SNOWPLOW: 50524 intended use
Is a wider snow-shovel blade always better?

Width changes the path covered, but also the space needed to maneuver. Compare the blade with your steps, walkway and storage area. The Suncast SC3250 has an 18-by-12-inch blade and a 52-inch overall length; the 24-inch 50524 is designed for pushing. Those are different jobs, not a wider-is-better ranking.

What should I check on an ergonomic snow shovel?

Check the grip, shaft shape and assembled length against your own stance before buying. The SC3250 uses a bent shaft and D-grip, but that does not establish that it fits every person or prevents injury. Also check whether its galvanized steel wear strip is suitable for the surface you need to clear.

At Ace Hardware ↗

A practical first comparison for an entrance or walkway where some snow gets pushed and some gets lifted. This combination design pairs an 18-inch blade with a bent, resin-covered steel-core shaft and a galvanized steel wear strip.

  • 18 × 12-inch blade
  • 52-inch overall length
  • D-grip and steel wear strip
The tradeoff

The fixed-length, bent shaft will not suit every stance. Check the fit in person and confirm that a metal wear strip is appropriate for your surface.

A second handle for lifting and tossing

At Shop Joe ↗

The distinctive feature is a second, spring-assisted handle below the main grip. It gives your lower hand a separate hold when moving snow, making this a different design to compare with a conventional single-shaft shovel.

  • 20-inch poly blade
  • Spring-assisted second handle
  • Aluminum wear strip
The tradeoff

The second handle adds a moving part and a different technique. We have not tested its strain-reduction claims; compare its feel before choosing it for that reason.

A dedicated pusher for shoppers who can move snow to the side rather than lift it over a bank. Its 24-inch UHMW polyethylene blade covers more width per pass than the 18-inch options here. The manufacturer offers replacement blades.

  • 24-inch UHMW polyethylene blade
  • Reinforced metal handle
  • Replaceable blade and bolt-together assembly
The tradeoff

Designed for pushing, not lifting or scooping. Keep a lifting shovel for piles and tight spots. The manufacturer page shows mixed stock controls, so confirm availability.

An alternative for shoppers who want an 18-inch poly blade with an aluminum shaft. The bent handle and D-grip distinguish it from straight-shaft tools, while the knock-down connection allows tool-free assembly.

  • 18-inch poly blade
  • Ergonomic aluminum handle
  • Tool-free knock-down assembly
The tradeoff

Knock-down construction is not the same as a folding handle. Check the assembled fit and exact model at a local retailer; availability varies by region.

A storage-focused comparison for a small shed or crowded garage. This manual combination shovel uses an 18-inch poly blade and a foldable steel handle, retaining a conventional blade width while letting the handle fold away.

  • 18-inch poly blade
  • Foldable steel handle
  • Curved D-grip
The tradeoff

The folding joint adds a connection to check before use. Confirm the actual folded dimensions with the seller; the manufacturer’s length fields are ambiguous.
