The right size matters more than the number

Measure your head and try the helmet with your goggles; it should fit snugly without rocking. Sizes differ by model, and a linked size is only an example. Inspect the actual helmet’s snow-sport certification label and follow its instructions. Replace a helmet after an impact according to the manufacturer’s guidance; damage can be hidden. Avoid used helmets with an unknown history. No helmet guarantees protection from concussion.

Before you choose

Answers to the practical questions behind this shortlist.

How do I choose the right ski-helmet size?

Measure your head and use the size chart for the exact model, then try the helmet with your goggles. It should sit snugly without rocking or twisting. A size selected in a shopping link is only an example. Check the actual helmet for a snow-sport certification label rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Why compare adjustable and fixed helmet vents?

Adjustable vents let you change airflow as conditions change; fixed vents offer fewer controls. Giro lists external vent control on the Ratio Mips, plus vertical tuning to help match goggles and head shape. Compare those practical adjustments in person. A vent count or a longer feature list does not establish a comparative safety winner.

Should I replace a ski helmet after an impact?

Health Canada identifies ski and snowboard helmets as single-impact helmets and says to replace them after an impact even if damage is not visible. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, inspect straps and buckles, and avoid a used helmet if its history is unknown. If your current helmet remains suitable, you do not need a new one just to gain more features.

Adjustable airflow for changing resort weather

Research pick

Check Amazon for the current price of the Mission Mips · Matte Black, Small; choose your measured size.

The Mission is a useful starting point if you want adjustable ventilation without a complicated control layout. Its dial fit, 14 vents and removable ear pads give practical ways to adjust comfort through a resort day.

  • 14 vents with regulator control
  • Dial-adjustable fit
  • In-mold shell and zonal Koroyd
The tradeoff

Confirm the Mips-equipped standard-fit version; some colorways are offered without it. Try it with your goggles. The linked Small size is an example, not a fit recommendation.

Giro pairs a hard-shell design with a rear In Form dial and adjustable airflow. Vertical tuning provides another adjustment when matching the helmet to your head shape and goggles.

  • Thermostat Control adjustable ventilation
  • In Form dial and vertical tuning
  • CE EN1077 listed by Giro
The tradeoff

Giro lists 600 g for Medium. The inspected Amazon offer is marked Matte Black (2022), so check the exact stock, labels and condition rather than assuming it is the latest season.

Check Amazon for the current price of the Obex Mips · Uranium Black Matt, M–L (55–58 cm).

The Obex combines an EPS liner with a polycarbonate shell and an ABS top section. Sliding vent covers and removable ear pads make it an alternative to compare when you want to vary airflow during the day.

  • 360-degree fit adjustment
  • Sliding ventilation covers
  • ASTM F2040 and EN1077B listed
The tradeoff

Do not confuse it with Obex Pure, POCito youth, BC or Connect versions. POC lists 500 g for M–L. Neither the shell materials nor Mips establish a comparative safety winner.

MOD1 Mips uses a BOA 360 fit dial and magnetic Fidlock buckle in a low-profile design. Removable liner and ear pads make cleaning easier, while the brim area includes channels intended to move air from goggles.

  • BOA 360 fit adjustment
  • Fidlock magnetic buckle
  • Fixed ventilation
The tradeoff

The vents cannot be closed like the adjustable options here. Choose adult standard fit and the Mips model; MOD1 Pro, non-Mips, Asia-fit and youth listings are distinct configurations.

Vantage 2 Mips adds separate top and side vent controls, a BOA 360 dial and a magnetic buckle. Its three-piece hybrid shell and full Koroyd coverage make it a more elaborate alternative to the simpler Mission.

  • 40 vents with dual regulators
  • BOA 360 dial and Fidlock buckle
  • ASTM F2040 and EN1077 listed
The tradeoff

Extra controls and construction features do not prove it protects better than another helmet. Confirm Vantage 2 Mips rather than original Vantage, the non-Mips Vantage 2 or Round Contour fit.
